The October issue of Pregnancy and Newborn magazine has an article on alternative approaches to childbirth, including quotes from Sarah Rivkin about using acupuncture during labor.

As the article notes, acupuncture can treat a wide range of pregnancy-related conditions, "from conception, to morning sickness, to turning breech babies."

"And when it comes to childbirth, getting needled can start labor, keep it going and alleviate pain. Once labor starts, the needles can help it progress--dilating the cervix and increasing the efficiency of contractions."

And, a propos of childbirth, Sarah just completed birth doula training!
